Volunteers Wanted

Volunteer Recruitment : Stepping Forward Job Club

After a long period of inactivity, we are re-developing the Stepping Forward Job Club at Birchfield Big Local. We are seeking to recruit a mixture of experienced and interested volunteers.

CAN YOU HELP?

Volunteer Assistants will develop and plan support activities and specialist service signposting in conjunction with other staff and partners.

Background:

The Birchfield Big Local (BBL) Stepping Forward Project was initially set up to provide a friendly and relaxed environment in which local people could improve their employment prospects for the future and explore the opportunities available to them.

This included:

  • Help with writing or checking CV’s

  • Help to access employment, training and education opportunities

  • Help with completing applications and letters

The project also offered access to other BBL provisions for people to learn new skills including conversational English and basic IT to build their confidence. The support provided was tailored to meet the specific needs of those attending and much of the support was on a one-to-one basis.

Over recent years the project has gradually ground to a halt due largely to the loss of key volunteers that led its activities.

English Class Presentations - July 2018

BBL English Class Student Awards 2018

On Wednesday 18 July we celebrated the achievements of the students attending the Birchfield Big Local English Conversation Class at Grosvenor Road Studios.

Tippa Naphtali, Volunteer Coordinator, introduced the event and thanked the students for their excellent attendance and commitment to improving their conversational English and thanked Mehnaz Fatma and Salema Bibi for their dedication in leading the twice weekly sessions.

Tippa said; “We cannot underestimate the importance of learning the language of any country in which a person may live. From the small things that we take for granted like speaking to neighbours, asking for directions and shopping; to the major things like applying for housing or income benefits, applying for and keeping a job.

Our English classes really help to support newly arrived communities to settle into and engage within the local life of the area, and to fulfill their basic human need, that of belonging.”

A huge thanks to the students for their enthusiasm and to Mehnaz and Salema for their ongoing commitment to the classes. Thanks also to Paula Clarke who has helped with support in developing the session resources.

We look forward to the new term starting in September.

Volunteer Presentations 2018

Volunteer Week presentation event

As part of National Volunteers Week, Birchfield Big Local held a celebratory and presentation event on 8 June 2018.

The event also had a dedication to one of our volunteers and participants, Donald Williams, who sadly passed away recently. Several people spoke about his dedication and input at Birchfield Big Local, particularly his involvement with The Elders Group, Secret Garden and Livingstone Road Allotments.

Presentations of certificates were made to our core volunteers that have contributed to English Conversation Classes, Women’s Group, Elders Group, IT Sessions and Reception/Administration.

Invited speakers included Baljeet Singh Ghataora (Chair of Birchfield Big Local Partnership Group) and Chris Church (Big Local representative) who thanked volunteers and spoke about the national Big Local initiative respectively.

Andrew Simons, Development Worker, said; “This now annual event is a chance for us to give thanks and celebrate the essential contribution that volunteers make to Birchfield Big Local and the local community. We were also able to share our memories of Donald Williams, one of our regular volunteers, who sadly passed away recently. Donald will be greatly missed by everyone.”

The Volunteer Co-ordinator, Tippa Naphtali, thanked everyone involved for helping to put this event together at short notice.
