Following the creation of the Birchfield Heritage Trail last summer with funding from the Commonwealth Games Legacy Fund, a second trail has now been completed. The first trail – or Green Trail – covered parts of West Birchfield including Calthorpe Arms, Lea Hall, St Mary’s Church, and Church Vale. The second trail – or Red Trail – takes us on a journey eastward towards Birchfield Road and includes the site of a Roman Kiln, the location of Aston Villa’s first football ground, and the UK’s first Odeon Cinema. The new trail is available on the webpage – www.birchfieldbiglocal.org/heritage-trail and a leaflet and map is being produced in preparation for Birmingham Heritage Week 2023 when it is planned to run guided tours.
