Please join us on Saturday 9th September (Birmingham Heritage Week) for a tour of some of the people and places that have put Birchfield on the map. We will be starting outside St Mary’s Church at 1.45pm for a tour of St Mary’s Church. Sometimes called “The Cathedral of the Industrial Revolution”, the church is the final resting place of Matthew Boulton, James Watt and William Murdoch. We will then proceed via the grave of William McGregor (1846 – 1911) – Founder of Aston Villa FC and the Football League, to the home of George Frederick Muntz (1794 – 1857) – industrialist and political reformer. We will also be visiting the site of the home of Lieutenant George Philip Lempriere (1855 – 1949), famous aeronaut and balloonist, before arriving at Grosvenor Road Studios, former home of James Henry Stone (1829 – 1908) and now – thanks to Hollick and Taylor – the second oldest operational recording studio in the UK after Abbey Road. This is where the sound tracks for Gerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds and Stingray were recorded. Many famous artists have recorded here over the years, most recently Ranking Roger and The Beat.
