With funding from the Holiday Activities with Food (HAF) programme Russell and the Birchfield Big Local youth team organised a two-week youth scheme based around the Boat House Café in Handsworth Park. The young people engaged in enrichment activities such as Graffiti art with Dave from GraffitiArts.com, a workshop on human rights and children’s rights, self-defence, and Qigong, alongside sports and wellbeing activities such as football, rounders, cricket, and other team games.

Russell and the youth team were able to reconnect with parents and young people after this challenging year for all and it was a pleasure to see the growth and maturity of the group many of whom have now started secondary school and to hear them discuss future aims and dreams. The scheme should help the young people build their confidence and resilience for the coming months as they return to school and cope with the ongoing challenges presented by Covid-19.
