In the week leading up to Christmas volunteers organized a meal for local elders at the Sons of Rest building in Handsworth Park. Andrea Walker from the Boat House Café provided a delicious Christmas meal of Turkey and Chicken with all the trimmings (vegetarian option – Nut Roast) – and entertainment was provided by local poet and musician Milton Godfrey (with sound engineer Mikey Godfrey). Partnership member, Dorette Hanson, expertly compered the bingo and a quiz. Thanks to Suki – Volunteer Co-ordinator and all the volunteers including Mehnaz, Israt, Koli and Sharon for planning and organizing the event. Many thanks also to Shaana, Asda Community Life Champion, who provided gifts and prizes.
Stepping Forward aims to provide a friendly and relaxed environment in which local people can improve their prospects for the future and explore the opportunities available to them. It includes the support you might find in a job club. For example:
- help with writing CV’s
- how to access employment, training and education opportunities
- help with completing applications and letters
However, it will also offer the opportunity for people to learn new skills, for example, conversational English and basic IT and build their confidence. The support provided will be tailored to meet the specific needs of those attending and much of the support will be one-to-one.
The sessions will take place every Tuesday 12 – 3pm, at Grosvenor Road Studios, 16 Grosvenor Road, Birchfield B20 3NP. Places are limited, so please book early. Tea and coffee will be provided.
For further information, please call: 0121 448 5594, email: email@example.com or call in at the studios for a leaflet.

Do you know of any buildings that could become a community centre or hub? Is there land in the Birchfield area that could be developed as a children’s play area?
What facilities would you like a community centre to provide? What would make the ideal play space for children?
These are some of the questions we would like you to help us answer. We have appointed Santosh Rai and Gavin Orton to carry out a survey of assets in the Birchfield area.
The purpose of the survey is to find land or buildings that could be used for community benefit – either as a community centre/hub or children’s play area.
We would like your help. To take part please complete the survey form at – http://goo.gl/forms/Q5TUdAij99.
The survey will also be distributed with the next newsletter with a free post envelope.
Many thanks for taking part.
