To celebrate Heritage Open Days, 10 -13th September, Birchfield Big Local are organising a walking tour of historical sites in and around the Birchfield Big Local area. We will be starting at Grosvenor Road Studios, 16 Grosvenor Road, which is the oldest recording studio in Birmingham and former home of James Henry Stone JP (brother of photographer and MP Benjamin Stone). From there we will be going to Calthorpe Arms, the original watering hole for Birchfield Harriers and then on to Lea Hall, built in the late eighteenth century by the wealthy Muntz family. George Frederick Muntz was an industrialist, MP and political reformer. From Lea Hall we plan to walk to St Mary’s Church known as the “Westminster Abbey of the Industrial Revolution” because industrial pioneers Mathew Boulton, James Watt and William Murdoch are all buried there. We will finish in Handsworth Park at the Boat House Cafe for a light buffet and refreshments.
